OAKLAND, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
California Bank & Trust (CB&T), www.calbanktrust.com,
is pleased to announce the bank is supporting Chabot College
Foundation's revolutionary textbook rental program. The program was
created to address the strain the cost of books and materials were
putting on students, causing many of them to drop out of school. The
program was piloted in the spring of 2009 and was initially supported by
funds donated to the foundation from California Bank & Trust and other
sponsors. This self-sustaining program gives students the opportunity to
rent otherwise costly textbooks for the semester at a third of the price
of purchasing the books outright.
"Chabot College plays an integral part in building the economic vitality
of Hayward and provides an excellent foundation for students who want to
learn and follow a career path. The textbook rental program makes it
more economically feasible for Chabot students to pursue their academic
and career goals," said Richard Hong, vice president and branch manager
of California Bank & Trust'sHayward branch and Chabot College board
member.
Chabot College's textbook rental program was recently recognized by the
U.S. Department of Education and received a FIPSE grant for its
excellent business plan. This grant will fully fund the program,
allowing Chabot to offer hundreds of textbooks available for students to
rent for the semester and create a larger-scale self-sustaining program.
"It was because of supporters like California Bank & Trust that the
Chabot College Foundation was able to implement this program. Through
this program's success and the FIPSE grant we have received, we are now
able to provide the most at-risk students, those who have difficulties
affording textbooks, with the materials they will need to become
academically successful," said Dr. Celia Barberena, president of Chabot
College.
